90% That’s how much your child’s brain is developed in his or her first five years.

What our children learn before Kindergarten can predict how well they do in school for the rest of their lives. Our community recognizes how important early learning experiences, like pre-k, are to a child. We want to make sure every child has the means to be prepared, no matter where they come from.

Assessed in MISD, children who attended a Texas public pre-k program for 80 days or more were 68% ready for Kindergarten.

At Educate Midland, our goal is to increase the number of kindergarten ready students to 70% in 2019-2020. How do you know if your child is ready for Kindergarten?

Here are a few key factors:
  • Learning to recognize letters
  • Learning to communicate
  • Learning to count
  • Playing outside

1 in 4 Children who fall behind in reading by the end of third grade stays behind for the rest of their time in school.

Third grade represents a key turning point in your child’s learning. The books and topics covered by teachers move from learning to read to reading to learn.

It’s not just reading skills and vocabulary that are aided by this shift. Your child’s ability to read is critical to achievement in math, building confidence and even persistence through high school graduation and beyond.

This is an empowering time when children can begin to see the value of skills they learn and how these skills build upon each other to learn new skills. Unfortunately, because of this transitional nature, third grade is a time where many kids are left behind.

The opposite is also true. If your child reads ahead of his or her level, they are more likely to graduate and attend college.

At Educate Midland, our goal is to increase the percentage of students proficient in third grade reading to 80%.
